Poly Strapping: Hand vs. Machine Grade for Pallet and Carton Bundling

Freight claims rarely start at the loading dock. They start three stops later, when a pallet that left square arrives leaning — cartons telescoped, the bottom row crushed, and the stretch film still perfectly intact. That last detail is the tell. The film did its job and the load failed anyway, because containment and compression are two different problems. Poly strapping solves the second one.

Containment vs. Compression

Securing a load involves three separate jobs, and no single material does all three.

  • Containment — stretch film unitizes the stack so nothing walks off the pallet in transit.
  • Corner protection — edge protectors spread concentrated force so the top cartons don't crush under tension.
  • Compression — strapping pulls the load into itself and holds that tension for the length of the haul.

Operations fighting recurring transit damage are usually missing one of the three, not all of them. If your pallets are already wrapped and still arriving shifted, compression is the gap — our stretch wrap guide covers the containment side in depth.

Strapping also handles work film can't touch: bundling loose cartons, banding bulky or irregular goods, reinforcing heavy cases, and closing containers that need more holding force than tape can deliver.

Hand-Grade vs. Machine-Grade Poly Strapping

This is the first fork in the decision, and it comes down entirely to how the strap gets applied.

Hand-Grade

Built for manual tensioners and sealers or battery-powered combination tools. Wound on larger cores for hand dispensing, with an embossed surface that improves grip while tensioning and strengthens the joint at the seal.

Hand-grade is the right call when:

  • You strap a modest number of loads per day rather than running a continuous line.
  • Load sizes and shapes vary enough that every strap is an operator judgment call.
  • You have no strapping machine on the floor and no plans to add one.

Machine-Grade

Engineered to feed through automatic and semi-automatic strapping equipment without jamming — consistent gauge, tighter wind tolerance, and 8x8 cores that seat properly in standard machine dispensers. Sold in longer coil lengths to reduce changeover downtime.

Machine-grade is the right call when:

  • You're running a tabletop, semi-automatic, or arch strapper.
  • Throughput is your constraint and every coil change costs line time.
  • Load profiles are consistent enough to justify automating.

Running hand-grade through a machine is a false economy. Inconsistent feed causes jams and misfeeds that cost more in downtime than the cheaper coil ever saved.

Polypropylene vs. Polyester: Matching Strap to Load

Most plastic strapping is either polypropylene (PP) or polyester (PET), and the difference between them shows up directly in your damage numbers.

Polypropylene is elastic. It stretches under tension and recovers, so it moves with a load that settles or compresses instead of snapping. It's the economical, high-volume choice for:

  • Bundling cartons, printed goods, and light-to-medium palletized product.
  • Carton closure and case reinforcement.
  • Loads that settle in transit, where some give works in your favor.
  • Applications where cost per foot matters at scale.

Polyester retains tension far longer on rigid loads. Where PP gradually relaxes over days in transit, PET holds close to its applied tension — which is why it replaces light steel strapping on heavy, rigid, non-settling freight like tile, brick, and machinery.

The practical rule: if the load settles or compresses, PP's elasticity is an advantage. If the load is rigid, heavy, and traveling a long way, tension retention becomes the priority. Not sure which side your loads fall on? Contact us and we'll work it through against your actual load profile.

The Specs That Change Your Order

  • Break strength — the force at which the strap fails. Spec against your heaviest realistic load, not your average one.
  • Width — wider strap distributes force across more surface and resists cutting into cartons. Narrower runs cheaper for light bundling.
  • Thickness — drives break strength alongside width, and changes how the strap feeds through equipment.
  • Core size — has to match your dispenser or machine. Machine equipment typically expects 8x8; hand dispensing uses larger cores.
  • Coil length — longer coils mean fewer changeovers, which matters most on automated lines.
  • Embossed surface — improves tensioning grip and joint efficiency at the seal.

Sealing the Joint

A strap is only as strong as the joint holding it closed. Three methods cover nearly every operation:

  • Metal seals applied with a manual tensioner and sealer — the standard low-equipment approach for hand strapping.
  • Friction weld — battery combination tools fuse the strap to itself, with no seals to stock or feed.
  • Heat seal — how automatic and semi-automatic machines close the loop, with no consumable hardware at all.

Whichever method your line uses, protect the corners.
