What Carton Sealing Tape Actually Needs to Do

Carton sealing tape has one job: hold the box closed from the moment it's packed to the moment it's opened, through however many touchpoints, temperature swings, and stacking pressures happen in between. That sounds simple until you factor in what actually varies box to box — carton weight, box board strength, storage conditions, and how long the shipment sits before it moves.

Buying tape on price per case alone, without matching adhesive type and thickness to the load, is how operations end up with a shelf of tape that looks fine in the box but fails in transit.

Acrylic Tape — The Default for Most Operations

Acrylic is the standard carton sealing tape for general warehouse and e-commerce shipping, and it's our highest-volume seller for a reason. It holds up over long-term storage without yellowing, performs across a wide temperature range (32°–140°F), and gives a clean, consistent unwind that doesn't slow down a packing station.

• 1.8 MIL — the workhorse thickness for standard corrugated cartons and typical parcel shipping. Best-priced option in the lineup and the one most operations should default to.
• 2.0 MIL — added thickness for heavier cartons or longer transit times where an extra margin of adhesion matters.
• 2.6 MIL — the upper end, used for maximum hold on dense or irregular loads.
• Stocked in 2" and 3" widths, 110-yard rolls, in case quantities built for repeat ordering rather than one-off packs.

Meets UPS and USPS shipping regulations out of the box, which matters if you're shipping parcel volume and can't afford a carrier rejecting a package over tape spec.

Hot Melt Tape — For High-Volume, Fast-Paced Lines

Hot melt uses a more aggressive adhesive that bonds immediately to corrugated, which makes it the better fit for high-volume warehouse and fulfillment environments where packing speed is the constraint. It's built for fast-paced sealing on recycled or lower-quality corrugated where acrylic's adhesive profile might not grab as fast.

If your operation is running multiple packing stations or a machine sealer at volume, hot melt is worth evaluating over acrylic — the tradeoff is adhesive aggressiveness for hold speed, not overall durability.

Kraft Tape — Tamper-Evident and Heavy-Duty Applications

Water-activated kraft tape bonds directly to the corrugated surface itself rather than sitting on top of it, which is what makes it tamper-evident — the seal can't be lifted and reapplied without visibly damaging the box. Fiberglass-reinforced versions add extra strength for heavy cartons or irregular surfaces where a standard tape might not hold the corners. It's a smaller share of what we move compared to acrylic and hot melt, but it's the right call when tamper evidence or extreme load weight is the priority.

Matching Tape Spec to Your Shipping Profile

A few questions determine which tape actually belongs on your packing line:

• How heavy is the average carton? Standard parcel weight stays on 1.8 MIL acrylic. Heavier or bulkier cartons should move up to 2.0 or 2.6 MIL.
• How fast does the line need to move? High-throughput packing stations benefit from hot melt's faster bond.
• Does the shipment need tamper evidence? Kraft tape is the only option in the lineup that visibly shows if a box has been opened.
• What's the storage or transit timeline? Long-term storage favors acrylic's resistance to yellowing and adhesive breakdown over time.

Most operations don't need to standardize on one tape type across the board — a distribution center running both retail returns and long-haul freight might reasonably stock acrylic for general sealing and hot melt for the high-speed line.

Dispensers Matter as Much as the Tape

A pistol-grip hand dispenser with adjustable tension does more for seal consistency than most operations give it credit for — inconsistent tape tension is a common, avoidable cause of lifted corners and weak seals, independent of the tape itself.
